12 months, 52 weeks, 365 days, 8,760 hours, 525,600 minutes, 31,536,000 seconds—but who's counting? 2023 started like every other year, with scars from past pains, victories to celebrate, hopes for the future, and most importantly, a key question: What difference does a year make?
If you’ve ever pondered this question, you’re in good company. I’m excited to share insights from our story—The Inspire Her Afrika story. By the end of this read, you might just find the answer you’ve been seeking.
To answer this question, let’s take a brief journey into our history. The idea for Inspire Her Afrika came from a life-changing mentorship I experienced while studying for my Master’s in Public Health at the University of York, United Kingdom. One sunny day, after lunch, Professor Noreen left me with words that etched deeply into my heart. I had thanked her for believing in me and guiding me, and she ended with, “I want you to do the same for other women who look like you.” I understood the message, but not the 'how.'
Fast forward to 2023, I had reached out to a couple of friends where I shared the vision. Eventually, a great friend, Ojonugwa Abubakar (Ojay), and I co-founded Inspire Her Afrika. Its been an incredible journey of growth and tireless efforts for both of us! Now, back to your question—what difference does a year make?
In 2023, we were thrilled to receive applications from across Western, Central, Eastern, Southern, and Northern Africa. Ultimately, 28 African women from five countries and three sub-regions formed our first cohort. By 2024, we expanded to receiving applications from 11 African countries. Alongside this growth, we enhanced our team to boost productivity and amplify our impact. Our mentorship program has been a catalyst for transformation. Mentees have secured leadership roles, started their own businesses, and driven change within their communities. Their personal growth, increased confidence, and expanded networks speak volumes about the program’s impact.
What difference does a year make? Hear from Memory Namasiku, a previous mentee now mentor: “IHA has opened my mind a lot more. I have been limiting myself for so many years. But now, I am ready to take on challenges that I thought I could never. I am more confident in pursuing projects or tasks that allow me to work with different kinds of people, projects that allow me to make meaningful impacts in people’s lives.”
In simple terms, a year can make a lifetime difference. In a year, you can change the lives of women across a continent. That’s the type of difference and impact you can make with your year.
